Daily Announcements Announcements
Date: Friday October 19, 2018

Day: (SCDSB 5 Day Cycle) Day 3

1. Today's Waste Reduction Week theme is food waste. Did you know that 40% of all food produced in Canada is wasted each year! We can reduce food waste by planning our meals with parents and making grocery lists. Also, take home leftovers from your lunch. Putting food in the garbage creates Methane gas which is 25 times more damaging to our climate than CO2. Some other great ways to decrease our food waste is by storing fruits and vegetables properly so they last longer, thinking about expiry dates and getting creative with leftovers. Take the Food Waste pledge at and help take care of planet earth, our only home.

2. Get your pop, pop, popcorn in the front foyer today during first nutritional break. There are three flavors to choose from, dill pickle, kettle corn and white cheddar. Each bag costs $1.00. Today is Tuesday, so we're talking about fabric and clothing today!

P2 : How can clothes and fabric be included in a circular economy that reduces waste?

P1 : I don't know? Does that mean not having to throw them out?

P2 : That's right. Here's the facts, did you know that the average person throws about 37 kilograms of clothing into the trash each year, and that 95 percent of that could be recycled or reused?

P1 : Yikes! Well, how can we help so we don't sent so much clothing to the garbage dump?

P2 : There's so many ways to help! You can give clothes to someone else such as a younger family member or a friend.

P1 : Maybe you could donate it or buy clothing from a clothing swap or a reuse store or freecycle it!

P2 : Or maybe you can turn old clothes into something new! Try something like that and help out our environment! Thanks Birchview!

Have you been bringing in Waste Free Lunches this week? Tomorrow, the Eco Team will be visiting your class to collect spirit points and to see which classes will earn the Eco Warrior Trophies for their division.
